Same here. I'm starting a PhD program and something like
this would be
useful, but I have no interest in Facebook, and I'm not
going to join
it to try out an app.

Anyone doing mind maps on the computer? What software are
you using?
And why do you like/dislike it?
I have been using Tinderbox for some time but I was
wondering if
there is something better. I just took a look at NovaMind
and it
looks pretty interesting - anyone using that one?
Cheers,
Karen

Hi Karen,
I started "electronic mindmapping" with Freemind,
which is a free,
platform independant mindmapping software, I can highly
recommend.
Later, luckily, I got a free licence for MindManager which
is much
more powerful, but normally not free. However, Mindmanager 6
for Mac
lacks some of the features the Windows version has.
If platform independance is not necessary for you, there are
some mac-
only solutions like MyMind etc.

I'll second Freemind as a great mindmapping tool - been
using it
consistently for a few years now. A friend just gave me the
heads up
about a web based mind mapping tool http://www.mindmeister.co
m/ From
my initial look, I note that MindMeister imports from
Freemind and
MindManager and exports to both, as well as to PDF, rich
text and
GIF, PNG or JPG image formats.
If I wasn't off for a Kiwi blokes weekend of beer, tuatuas
and winter
surfing, I'd checking it out.
cheers

There's a list of just about all known mind mapping software
at mind-
mapping.org
You can see the lot, or filter by platform and type.
I'm on Windows myself, so knowing what I use won't help
much.
Don't forget all the web-based ones that you can use in a
browser on
any platform, though.

Every time I follow the link, I get redirected to the
Facebook home page.
How do I view the app info without having to sign up to this
week's "everybody uses it" site?

Thanks for all who replied. Yesterday I came across iMindMap
(www.imindmap.com). It looks more freeflowing than any of
the others
I've used or tested or seen. You can also do (and therefore
add) a
quick sketch to a branch instead of relying on ugly clip art
(which
to me is such a turnoff). You work in either the speed mode
or the
better (for learning & retention) more organic drawing
mode.
The software is still rough around the edges (at least on
the mac
side) - especially the outline/text view, but hopefully it
will only
get better and better. And input is so very easy and
intuitive - I
really like creating the maps in it - it's *much* more
intuitive than
anything I've see before. Input is much more natural and the
results
are much more personalized. For idea generation/creative and
problem/
solution work it looks really great and a great fit for me.
I've
really had trouble trying to adapt to the more rigid
solutions that I
have seen and tried to use over the last few years.
NovaMind looked really good and has excellent style sheet
options so
it's really easy to style maps once they are created. For
creating
web navigation site maps it would be the best choice for
sure
(especially since it seems to have some powerful auto
numbering
options).
So I think I'll start with iMindMap and watch NovaMind to
see where
they go in the future.
Cheers,
Karen

Well, it looks interesting, but it appears that you have to
join
Facebook to use it, so that kills it for me.

I did have a non-Facebook version before, but it attracted
little
interest, so I abandoned it for now.
One nice thing about Facebook applications is that they tend
to have a
similar look and feel. So it's less likely that people will
complain
about the user interface.
