Funny, I prefer the web for this, getting the Abridged Email
once a
day for a reminder, but otherwise keeping my in box clean,
and
checking the web forum when I have time. I've tried the
email and just
found it cluttering. The web keeps everything and in good
order. There
s nothing here that can't wait for a web connection. I could
see how
some groups would require more portability though.
RsS also doesn't appeal to me (again seems cluttering)
though I can
see how some would like it.
I guess it is good we have all these choices, even for
accessing the
same information.
I like the looks for the Google Groups much better than the
other 43
Folders forum.
And while we are on the subject, I hate those websites that
play
videos or audio without my asking. Why they think I'm going
to like
that is beyond me.

Agreed - that's pretty much why I use a second gmail account
- exactly
because when I'm working I don't need list emails coming
through, but
it's nice to use gmail's conversation grouping when I am
keen to read.

Mailing lists were made for Gmail and vice versa. I don't treat Google Groups any differently from other e-mail lists, and I try to use my Gmail addresses only for mailing list traffic (don't trust a free service whose business model is based on indexing content for material that isn't already public anyway).

"Youse-net" absolutely makes my day! Thanks for
the great laugh. It's
been a long time since I totted up the years since I started
with
Usenet--and the '80s seem so far away most of the time!

back when it was a big deal to have a dial up nntp feed,
over my 24k
line.

Amateurs. We had to use a quill on parchment paper and
submit our
USENET postings by mail.

Not only did we have to cut our own quills, we had to
write really small
to fit our postings on discarded punch holes.
In all reality, my first modem I soldered together was a
60 baud job, and
I was overjoyed when I got a Hayes Smartmodem. That little
black box was a
delightful gateway to the world.
obTopic: This is the second old phart thread in this
group. Is it just
me, or does it seem like the same people who were cutting
edge in the days of
CP/M the same mindset that modern "org-porn"
appeals to? Next thing you know
we'll start a thread on 43folders user's Ham callsigns.
Somewhere in a box I have a 5" sliderule that would
fit on a Hipster PDA.
I know there's a video floating about with a iPod shuffle
used as a clip to
provide music playback on a HPDA... I could add the
calculator function. ;)

Oh, c'mon. I remember when you needed to know how to use "!" for email. So there.... :-0
No, that was not on my task list, but it did take less than two minutes...

Heh. Telenet user here. No, not telnet... the Telenet
network. And yes,
I recall the days before DNS as well.
As a semi-ontopic (okay, really tenuous) concept, I
remember how nice it
was to read at 1200 baud, as you could comfortably just keep
your eye at the
cursor and everything flowed into your mind. I wonder if
any eBook readers
around do that, printing out at the speed you read.
Stepping up to 2400 baud
was too fast for comprehension, 300 baud was too slow for
just reading
through large blocks of text.
It would also be a nifty way to learn to read faster,
upping the speed
slowly. Blind users that use speech synths use them at
amazing speeds.

I remember punch cards! Sure, I was a kid hanging out at my
dad's
office, but I had fun making my own punch cards.
