It is ironic that this 43 Folders group is still more active
than the
other one; Merlin was considering shutting this one down
back in Jan.
'06, when he started this (http://board.43folders.co
m/)
I'm glad he didn't; Google groups reminds of the simplicity
found in
Apple products.

Yeah, and since it behaves like a mailing list, it's easier to follow and contribute than a web forum. Call me old school, but the whole web forums thingy never caught on me.

Email is still easier than any board forum software, this is
as true
today as it was back in 87.

I hate message boards/forums. I prefer to do this in
email.

I'm on a couple of software development groups, and the
preferred
medium there is newsgroups! That surprised me, because to
me, email
is a killer. I checkout the DavidCo forums, but even now
usually only
when the RSS alerts me. Web forums bad, email good.

It *is* a mailing list. I never go to the Google site
to read this, it's
just another L- mailbox in my mail client of choice.
I hate and despise web forums. I'd give them a go if
they supported some
sort of offline reader a la the BBS era readers. Basically,
I want to zip
through messages. Maybe a good RSS feed would work, but
mailing lists are
already a known and mature tech that fits the bill.

I'm exactly like that. As I said when Pointcast was a
"new and
exciting" product: Email is all the push I need. RSS
are finally
getting to places where they're almost usable, but I'd still
like them
to be autonomous enough to be taken online. The
applications aren't
done (to my mind) before I can take my laptop on a plane and
continue
to read and write offline.
Or, put shortly: Forums suck.

I have been in training the last two days with eight other
folks. We
are making up a group hand-picked by our CEO to lead change
in the
business. While I and another senior manager were flattered
to be there
on the strength of our long experience, all the others are
bright young
MBA, PMI and grad program folks with hugh potential.
After discussing how often we'd meet face to face and the
style of those
meetings, the facilitor prompted us to think how we might
communicate
and track trains of thought quietly amongst ourselves
inbetween times.
I suggested a closed user group newsgroup.
"What's a newsgroup?" they all chorused with
quizzical looks.
While explaining that a newsgroup was liked a noticeboard of
threaded
email conversations ("How do you mean
'threaded'?"), I realised that
around 20 years has passed since I first used one. Needless
to say, I
didn't even mention other 'cutting edge' Windows 3.1
productivity apps I
used then like WordPad, Netscape Navigator and the Card
Index app.

Ah, yes.
This reminds me of a month or so ago, when an acquaintance
shared
with me the revelation of a new, and exciting thing he had
found to
download binaries, called "Youuuuu-senet."
