Well, I gave in and bought a new computer. I was all set to buy a
Dell, then had a brain lapse and let a local small business talk me
into buying a custom built one from them. I've had several problems
since buying the unit just before Christmas, which he told me are now
fixed (he took it in a couple of weeks ago). However, one of the
problems is not fixed and he won't call me back, so I'm now wondering
what the problem could be so I know how to proceed.

Note: I bought the unit only from him. He used my old DVD and floppy
drive. I still have my old monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.

The problem is that whenever I go to plug my camera's USB cord into
the front of the PC, the monitor shuts off. I don't even get as far
as plugging it in--just touch the front with the plug. The pc stays
on. I have to hold the power button in to shut it off, then restart
it. Upon reboot, the monitor is on and everything is fine.

As long as I leave the USB cord plugged in, then plug my camera into
it with the camera shut off, it works fine. If the camera is on when
I plug it in, the same thing happens--monitor shuts off. (If I turn
the monitor off, then back on, the no input box is floating around.

And just FYI, it was doing this same thing with my old computer.

I sure would appreciate the help.

TIA,
Diane

P.S. The other problems he said were caused from overheating. Yep, on
my NEW computer. He says he's "repaird or replaced" the MB.

Diane have you swapped USB cables to see, if a new one
does the same thing to the monitor?

Also, Do you have an anti-static mat or, is the floor
covered carpet that cause you to have static
electricity?

Take them to small claims court and get your money back.
