WindowsXP home / WinXP Media Center

I recently found out that if you have 2 Users on your computer and save
the registry, it only saves the registry for the User that is logged in.
How do you save the registry for the whole computer so you can restore in
the event you get a virus?

Thanks.

Where did you read that?

There is only one registry on a computer and you log in as administrator to
back it up.

Restore does not remove a virus it only remove changes made.

Virus protectors remove a virus.

There's only 1 registry in XP. Each separate user's settings are stored
in that registry under a long Security Key (beginning with S) under the
HKey_Users key. When a specific user logs on, the data from her
HKey_Users key profile is copied to the registry key HKey_Current_User.
So as long as she's logged on the HKey_Current_User key holds all her
registry profile settings.

So, technically, to save a specific user's registry data you could log
on as that user and then use Regedit to export just the
HKey_Current_User key.
If you use Regedit to export the "entire" registry you will be saving
the entire registry - including all the users' profiles.
If you use System Restore to create a restore point (or use it to
restore back to a certain date) the entire registry will be saved.

So it really depends on the method you use to save the registry data as
to whether all the users' data gets saved.

Good luck,
Donk
