maillog: "email.txt no longer exists, can't re-use it"

What would cause a log entry like this to happen?

Jul  6 17:19:58 mail amavis[25259]: (25259-08) 
/var/amavis/tmp/amavis-20060706T163145-25259/email.txt no
longer exists, 
can't re-use it

The directory is left in /var/amavis/tmp which needs to be
manually 
removed.  It looks like something is wrong when there are
multiple 
recipients on an incoming SPAM message?  How to fix?

You need to stop amavisd before removing any temporary
directories
that may still be in use. It is usually OK to delete them if
they are
a day old or older. Each temporary directory is reused a
number
of times. If you manually remove one that is still being
used,
you may get that error.

That is strange, looks like the file was created in a wrong
directory.
Which version of amavisd-new? How are you feeding mail to
amavisd - is this
a sendmail milter setup or perhaps a Courier setup? Are any
special patches 
applied to amavisd (like calling altermime from within)?
