But IIRC when the ramdisk fills up, amavisd-new stops.
Ramdisk is Ok
when the system is healthy, but I imagine it would only make
things
worse on a system having problems.

In this post it appears you are using Maia and allowed very
large
files which it was discovered Maia 1.0 tries to slurp into
memory:

(I think that particular design problem has been addressed
in 1.0.1.)
When it ran out of steam it left the temp files and Postfix
tried
again. You talk of one machine having 2.2 gigs, and the
other 16.8
gigs. On a healthy system you would only have as many temp
directories
as you have $max_servers and possibly a handful more, so
both systems
(at that time) were sick. Are you still allowing these very
large
files? How many temp directories are left on your other two
systems?
This may not be your problem at all, and of course following
the debug
instructions Mark pointed you to would provide considerably
more insight,
but I though this might be related. Are you still running
Maia 1.0?
