As long as you make a backup copy of amavisd, one option is
to simply
try it and see if it crashes. The errors produced (if any)
will give
clues of what might need to be done. You might be missing a
directory,
which can be created and given ownership to the amavis user,
or maybe
it will look for amavisd.conf as /etc/amavisd.conf but your
system
stores it as /usr/local/etc/amavisd.conf in which case a
symlink
could be created to work around he problem. If you are using
a really
old version, you might need to install pax, or to take
advantage of
new cache techniques, BerkeleyDB Perl module. You might need
newer
versions of some helper programs and might need to configure
$banned_quarantine_to and $bad_header_quarantine_to. It
mainly depends
whether your version is pre 2.0 or not. If you were using
Debian, now
that's another story...
