Take a look at the new Office XML spec. It is possible to
build Word
docs (and other office docs) via XML now (though you still
go through an
SDK).

Subject: [ADVANCED-DOTNET] Running word from a web server
Hi all,
I am engulfed in a rewrite of an old ASP application to
ASP.NET 2.0.
Part of which generates word documents on the fly from the
web server.
The application uses office 2003. This is notoriously tricky
and
resource hungry. It has peculiarities such as word needs to
be visible
as part of the process. Thankfully the amount of traffic
the product
gets is small or the web server would blow up.
What I would like to know is if this is any easier with word
2007. Can
I generate word 2003 documents from the web server using
office 2007?
Will this make my life easier? My initial thoughts were to
have a
windows service running that receives requests via MSMQ for
these word
documents. But the time scales on this project (as is
always the case)
are small. I need a quick win really. Can anyone with
experience at
this type of thing share their experience? Cheers
