Fellow Advanced-Dotnet readers and especially those of you
with LinkedIn accounts,
While the opportunity to add new people to my 1st degree
network is appealing, I don't actually know any of you, and
I treat my linkedin account with the utmost respect - I
don't harvest connections, I'm not trying to get on any
500+, 1000+ or more lists.
The people I want on my 1st list are people whom I know and
have worked with. I want those people willing to actually
introduce me to their connections, and so on.
Those people that harvest connections that are willing to
introduce you to people they don't know are a sore on the
ass of LinkedIn. An introduction is a person's way of
saying "I know this person, I am willing to introduce
them to you, and risk sullying my good name by doing
so".
While there are people that are way more talented than I am
on Advanced-Dotnet, and I'm sure people who could might have
connections with hiring managers, I do not think it's a
worthwhile connection if I do not know you (or you do not
know me - what use is introducing me or some other stranger
to somebody you know - we could be wackos and you'd look
bad).
People need more restraint on LinkedIn, this isn't MySpace
or Facebook. The size of your 1st degree list should be
representative of your real business network, not some
random people you do not know.
Good luck, take care,
-Ryan
