amidi sysex'es -- solved

As suggested by someone on another list, the solution was to
first do "aconnect -x" to disconnect everything
from the keyboard controller, before initiating the sysex.
Apparently amidi just idles waiting for everyone to release
the port, before it tries to read anything from it.
