For the benefit of others that might come later...
1) The interaction was tighter than I previously
believed...aseqdump was
only reporting incoming data when data was actually going
out the port.
Playing a sequence that only had MIDI data at the beginning
and end of the
file resulted in a aseqdump that only produced data at the
beginning and end
of the playback, even though the data being sent to aseqdump
was a constant
stream.
That piece of information led me to re-examine the serial
ports...sure
enough, if I put the serial driver on a different port, it
worked fine.
Digging into the configuration of the non-working port, I
found that the
system was now reporting it as being on IRQ 16, not IRQ 169
as it had
previously. Not sure what changed to cause this. I changed
the options
line of the snd-serial-u16550 driver to IRQ 16, and it now
appears to work
properly.
