And the funny thing is, when I run alsamixer, there's
no Master or PCM, either. The only volume control that
affects anything is "Front" (even though the
front
controls don't work -- the speakers are plugged into
Line Out in the back).

This version is too old. You need at least 1.0.13 (which may
be part
of kernel 2.6.20, but I'm not sure)

Or you can try 1.0.14rc3.
