Congratulations on your success!
I also have Chris' book and I love it.
As for your question:
Google is able to research stuff to the nth degree.
Your issue has to do with relevancy.
This is how Google overtook the big-namers in search engines
a few
years ago.
If Google doesn't feel that your word is relevant
(remember, they get
the searches and they know where people go when the
ads/search results
are served up) then they will require you to pay more for
the keyword.
Think of it as kind of a warning for not creating relevant
ads.
The keyword here, excuse the pun, is relevancy.
Always ask yourself, will a person searching for x type this
into the
search bar and will it be relevant when your ad is served?
i.e. will
your ad/product be what they are REALLY looking for.
So, what to do? Tweak your adcopy. Make sure the keyword and
other
relevant words are in there. Make sure the landing page also
has
some/part of the keywords. Copy your keywords and ad, delete
the ad and
start over. Sometimes just reversing the first and second
lines of your
adcopy will do wonders. Review your keyword list, take one
phrase/keyword and research what else people searched for
when they
typed that into the search bar - Google's Keyword Sandbox
is great for
this.
Hope it helps!
Respectfully,
Amadeo
