Our client, a prestigious research organization in
Washington, DC, is currently interviewing for a technical
services librarian.
Overview: Under the general direction of the Library
Director, the incumbent serves as the chief technical
services librarian, responsible for cataloging all materials
added to the collection, managing the day-to-day operation
of the online catalog, and supporting desktop computers used
by staff and in the public areas of the Library.
Responsibilities: Provides descriptive cataloging for all
Library materials, using Anglo-American Cataloging Rules;
assigns subject headings using Library of Congress subject
headings; assigns classification numbers to all items;
maintains corporate, personal name and series authority
files; maintains shelf list file ensures integrity of online
catalog.
Additionally , serves as system administrator for Library's
online catalog; coordinates installation of upgrades with
vendor as needed; does occasional Active Server Page
programming to make changes in online library system;
supports desktop computers in public area of Library and
provides technical support for Library staff; represents
Library in Computer Advisory Committee and attends
bi-monthly meetings
Qualifications: Master's Degree in Library Science from an
ALA-accredited school, or equivalent combination of subject
area Master's Degree and 3-5 yrs. work experience in
library or information center, at least two of which must be
in a related position or position requiring active
participation with electronic resources. Experience
utilizing Web-based integrated library system required.
Systems analysis and database design experience preferred.
Functioning knowledge of HTML and style sheets. Working
knowledge of XML, Cold Fusion, JAVA and SQL. Extensive
experience in cataloging serials and interpreting rules for
constructing forms or names and uniform titles.
Facility with performing original cataloging; thorough
knowledge of Library of congress subject headings, LC
classification schedules, and current Anglo-American
cataloging rules; fluency in working with automated library
catalog; and ability to pay very close attention to details.
Knowledge of and/or experience in cataloging electronic
items highly desirable. Experience with code writing and
editing of ASP (Active Server Pages) highly desirable.
