Sorry Dave, still failing miserably.

Also I see that when I attempt to access the list from within DB on
my Ubuntu system, that nothing happens.

I take this to mean that either my system is indeed FUBARred or that
I am missing some necessary library for correct DB use.

I'll give up for a while while I concentrate on my own program, but I
need to sort this out eventually, since the intention is that my
program works on all supported systems.
