Hi folks,
I'm trying to get DB 4.17 to run on Debian Linux 4.0/amd64. The
suggested steps for getting it to work on 64bit Ubuntu don't really work
on Debian (although I'll keep trying to get it to run). Any news from
the 64bit front? Can we expect a 64bit binary anytime soon?

Can you describe the problem? It's a bit hard to comment intelligently
otherwise.

I'm looking at building on 64-bit systems but if we can find ways to run
DB on 32-bit systems, I'd prefer to put the effort into that for now.
I'm really not sure what the advantage of a 64-bit DB would be, compared
with the time it would take to build both 64-bit and 32-bit versions and
expect them to work on multiple distributions. I've just run 32-bit DB
on 64-bit OpenSuSE 10.3 and it didn't require any changes.
A user of DB on 64-bit Gentoo found that this let DB run:
LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib32/libXinerama.so" ./dialogblocks
but I don't know if Xinerama is your problem.
I'll compare performance between 32-bit and 64-bit DB but I don't expect
to see a whole lot of difference - DB isn't all that processor intensive.
Best regards,
Julian

I did try installing 64-bit Ubuntu but unfortunately it didn't want to
play with VMware. I have a binary I built with OpenSuSE 10.3 (64-bit) if
that would be of any use:
http://www.anthemion.co.uk/dialogblocks/DialogBlocks-4.17-i686-64bit.tar.gz
I don't know if it'll run on 64-bit Ubuntu.

Julian

Sorry, I meant 64-bit Debian.

Thanks Julian, it seems to work fine on Debian 4.0/amd64! Much better
than having to mess around trying to get the 32-bit version to run.

Good!

Still, I'd be interested to know what the errors were...
Thanks,

I'll have another attempt at getting it to run later on -- I'll have to
re-setup the 32-bit stuff on Debian, which includes installing a couple
32-bit libs aside the package system and tweaking some other stuff, and
then I'll send you a more detailed report. Unfortunately, Debian doesn't
ship (anymore) with 32-bit compatibility libs for gtk+ etc.
In short, all character glyphs only showed up as small squares, and
libpango complained about not being able to load some shared objects,
and some other things which I don't remember right now. However, the
issue is, how difficult do you want to make it for those who want to
install the software on 64-bit systems; a detailed step-by-step listing
to get it to run on 64-bit Linux would be ok but a 64-bit binary is much
better and a lot less hassle.

Hi Matthias,
If it's so tricky, please don't bother on my account!
I had no idea it was so difficult on Debian/64 when OpenSuSE has no
problems at all running 32-bit binaries (at least, mine). Sounds like
Debian have some work to do...
Regards,
Julian

It involves some tinkering (and I couldn't get it to work last time I
tried); I didn't have the time yet, maybe later this week. It doesn't
seem to be trivial.

Yes.. debian provides an amd64 package with the ia32 compatibility base
libs but (no longer?) one with gtk2/glib/etc. libraries. There's one for
unstable which (probably not surprisingly) doesn't seem to work on
stable. Whatever.
Somehow this reminds me of getting certain Linux binaries to run on
FreeBSD's linuxulator...
