Hi, we are looking at which flavour of linux to use for our project. Up
to now we have been using Ubuntu but the embedded computer we have does
not have approved support for Ubuntu. We can still go with Ubuntu, but
just wanted to know if there are any linux preferences with respect to
wxWidgets and the wxWidgets community, before a final choice was made.
That may help us with our decision. Ideally we would like something
that many people in the wxWidgets community are familiar with.

Initially we will be running linux on an embedded x86 computer but
later will be porting to an ARM embedded computer. So, these are also
factors in our linux decision.

Of course we will also be looking at a light weight linux - eg Damn
Small Linux, Not DSL and Puppy. Are there many people using wxWidgets
with these flavours of linux??

Cheers,
Mark

I should add that we will have a development linux machine and a target
linux machine (Embedded x86 and Embedded ARM). The linuxes probably
wont be the same. For example our development machine could use Redhat,
Debian or Ubuntu and our embedded computer could use Puppy.

If you have a lot of Linux experience and you want a high performance
system, use Gentoo. http://www.gentoo.org/ If you don't have much
experience, or you don't want to spend time tweaking it, then
I would not recommended Gentoo.

I started out with Puppy many years ago, moved to RedHat 5, then
Mandrake 7, then Gentoo. Can't speak to how well DB/wx will
work on today's Puppy. Why are you considering using such a small
distro for a development system? To me that seems like that
will cause you scheduling problems.

On ARM is anyone running that as a development system?
I usually see ARM targets being cross compiled.

Depending on what you are really trying to accomplish
with your target system, don't overlook NetBSD and
Minux-3.

NetBSD? Ok, it's not Linux but should be similar enough for your
purpose. And probably a bit more professional wrt embedded stuff.
