For posterity, here's the patch I'm running in Collex
production right now, and its working fine thus far.

Sorry, I know this issue has a convoluted set of patches to
follow at the moment.  I trust that when Ryan is back in
action we'll get this tidied up and somehow get
Yonik-satisfying refactorings
