           Summary: Can't replace top level <svg> tag
in DOM
           Product: Batik
           Version: 1.7
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: SVG DOM
        AssignedTo: batik-devxmlgraphics.apache.org
        ReportedBy: archiedellroad.org

Batik's DOM implementation doesn't seem to support replacing
the top level <svg>
node in a document. I've tried two methods:
(a) using replaceChild()
(b) using removeChild(), then appendChild()

When I try to do this, the image just disappears (goes
blank).

I'll attach a test Java program that demonstrates the
problem.

Hi Archie.

Whether removal/replacement of the document element is
supported is
implementation dependent. DOM 3 Core says that if it is not
supported, a
NOT_SUPPORTED_ERR DOMException should be thrown. So I think
Batik should either
throw the exception or ensure that it works.

Replacing the document element now works. Various things
don't work if the
document has no document element, but I think that's
acceptable.
