Anyone know what
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/xmlgraphics/ba
tik/branches/apache/ is?
It looks like it has some W3C and SAX code, plus some very
old Batik
code. OK to delete?

It's probably fine to delete (after all it can always be
recalled if
needed for some reason). I have a slight preference for
creating an
abandoned/dead/pruned directory to move it into but deleting
it is
probably fine.
Any idea what other projects do with dead branches?

In FOP we left them be. I, too, prefer moving the branches
to a
subdirectory. After all when you delete a branch, how do you
know that a
certain branch ever existed (looking at the HEAD revision
only)? In SVN,
it's a little difficult. It's better to let them live
especially since
they don't take up additional space like with CVS. Deleting
short-lived,
unimportant branches is ok, though.
