Many thanks for your interest in helping with HttpClient 3.1
development
Getting involved is absolutely simple. To a start take a
look at the
development road map below:
http://wiki.apache.org/jakarta
-httpclient/HttpComponentsProjectRoadmap?action=show
There is a link with a Bugzilla query to show open issues
targeted for
the release 3.1. Some of the bugs lined up for 3.1 release
are fairly
trivial. Some of them even have patches attached. Go through
the list,
pick up an issue you find simple and interesting enough to
keep you
motivated and run with it. To goal should be to not only fix
the bug or
implement a new feature but also to preserve the API
compatibility with
3.0. So, it is important to ensure that all existing test
cases pass.
You should also try to provide additional test coverage for
new code
whenever possible. Lots of test cases in a patch will make
us, the
actual committers, feel warm and fuzzy. Once you think the
fix is ready
to be reviewed, attach a patch to the bug report and I will
take it from
there.
The most difficult and important part of the 3.1 release is
undoubtedly
the RFC 2965 (Cookie2) support. Samit did a good job on it,
but was
unable to complete it fully. The RFC 2965 cookie spec still
lacks some
polish and testing. If any of you were interested to do some
work there,
it would be really awesome. This said, I would strongly
recommend to go
for some low hanging fruits first, get a feel of what
hacking for a
Jakarta project is like, and then take on something more
challenging.
