This has come up before, so no doubt some folks have already
made up
their minds, having seen the subject line.
Jorge Schrauwen, who has written a number of httpd
tutorials,
articles, etc., was asking on #httpd-dev about the
possibility of a
docs wiki, where people can provide configuration samples,
ideas,
suggestions, mini-howtos, which would eventually feed into
the
official docs. He's planning to do this anyways, but
wondered if
there was a way that he could do it within the confines of
the
existing docs project, rather than hosting it himself.
Scratch an
itch, and give back to the community at the same time.
I'd like to propose that we create a portion of
wiki.apache.org for
this purpose, and give it a test run for a while, see if it
works,
and make a determination after a while on whether it is
indeed
valuable. I would be glad to be the (moderator? overseer?
big
brother?) whatever the term is, and check in on it for
appropriateness and correctness of the contributions.
I created http://rewrite.drbacchu
s.com/ specifically for this purpose
- as a scratchpad for myself - and it has developed into a
more
useful resource than I planned, which is to say that folks
other than
myself are using it for reference. And the goal there is
still to
have this stuff feed back into the docs.
Having an official place to do this prevents (or reduces)
the
proliferation of alternate doc sites with incorrect,
misleading, or
outdated information. At least, that's my hope.
Thoughts?

I don't have any problem with this, as long as there is one
other
person (in addition to you) who will actively follow the
wikidiffs.
(I trust you, Rich, but I don't think one person is ever
sufficient
overview.)
You'd also need to figure out where to send the wikidiffs.
I'm sure
they won't be welcome at the main cvs commits list. And
sending them
to this list would probably kill the list for good. But at
the same
time, they need to be read by some group of people.
Joshua.

Yes please.
I'd like to see a home for the now-dead errors wiki you
started a while ago.

Hi all,
Bit more info as to why:
I visit some popular httpd boards (Devside.net, Apachelounge.com...) usually users as about the same question.
How do I configure a DAV server, How do I password protect a folder,
how to I force location /someloc to be always ssl, how do I create
Aliases... this list goes on and on.
Usually links are provided to resource some counter dicting eachother, some just don't work and so on.
So I had the idea of create a wiki for this that everyone could post to, fix broken piece of code, extend them...
I chatted about this with some friends and the they linked the idea. But we also agreed that hosting it ourselves wouldn't be get as much community activity as a official one at httpd.a.o.
I'd also be willing to help moderate the wiki.
Here are some links that use the same code examples: The need to upgrade from http to https http://forums.devside.net/viewtopic.php?p=363#363
http://forums.devside.net/viewtopic.php?p=3605#3605 http://www.apachelounge.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=828&highlight=ssl+rewriteengine
Due to a being a bit short on time today i can't provide more example but just googling should turn up a few.

I think this is a good idea. It will allow people the
opportunity of
contributing small parts to the overall docs project.
Over the past few months, a small group of us in #apache
have been
collecting such documents, and scraps of config's that
could be an ideal
candidate for this such site.
Another way that the site could be used, is for peer review
of larger
changes to the docs materials.
I for one am a little hesitant about sending off lots emails
to the
docs
group, for a few reasons, one major reason being that it is
rather
daunting.
I have been working on the FAQ for 2.2 for some time, and
before sending
it all off, it could/would be nice for some peers to review
my work
before embarrassing myself any further.
Anyway, before I bleat on too much, I will end it here.

I think it is going to be a whole lot more trouble than it
is worth -
but as long as you don't get wiki diffs mailed to this
list, I suppose
it will be easy enough to ignore ;)

I've the same opinion like Joshua. No problem with a wiki,
but it has to be
monitored by some people. And the diffs should go to a
separate list.

+1 for the idea provided that enough people care about it (I
guess at least 3
would be nice) and +1 to a new list for the diffs as I do
not think that they
are welcome on any existing list in httpd land.

I reckon it's going to be worth a whole lot more than the
trouble it
causes =)
I'm happy to keep an eye on wikidiffs

I've opened a ticket: https
://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-956
I don't actually know if I've jumped through the correct
hoops, so I
don't know if the desired result will actually happen.
