I'd like to rethink a bit including mpg123 in the sources
of Asterisk.

One thing mpg123 can do that native MoH cannot is streaming
music from a
remote location. However mpg123 is an anmaintained package
with known
security holes that become explotable by a remote host if
used that way.

The Debian packages patched several of those holes. I'm not
sure about
other known holes.

http
://packages.debian.org/unstable/sound/mpg123 has links
to the
changelog and diff of the Debian package.

That is not true. There is a tool in the utils directory
called
'streamplayer' that can used to do exactly that.
