I need to build some new asterisk machines, and I would like
to know what
other people have that work reliably.

I would like to use a simple Wildcard with 1 fxs board as a
timer, since all
the calls are IP.

Has anyone had good results with ia64 or amd64?

Has anyone gotten things to work with an SMP machine?

What versions of zaptel and asterisk are you using?

Thanks for the help. I don't want to go spending thousands
of dollars on
hardware that won't work.

I'm pretty sure you cannot use zaptel with AMD64. I installed the i386 version of FreeBSD on my AMD machine and it worked but when I used the amd64 version it crapped out on zaptel. But don't take my word for it.

As for the version the current FreeBSD port (/usr/ports/net/asterisk) will install Asterisk-1.2.9.1 and zaptel-1.0. That has been working solid for me. Although I had to add the line

WITHOUT_FAX=1

to the Makefile to get the build to complete successfully.

Thanks for the info Frank. Are you using one processor, or
more than one?

amd64 processor should be fine, but save yourself possible
trouble
and travel the path more well-travelled - i386 uniprocessor
kernel...
The more you do out-of-the-ordinary, the less chance someone
else
has run into any potential problems.

Okay, but only if you promise not to laugh....I use an old 1998 model Dell Optiplex with a single P220 with 64 MB RAM. It's never really been load tested but that's next. For my setup though it works great. I have a small LAN with three FreeBSD servers and some WinXP machines running X-Lite and a Grandstream BT-200 IP phone. I also run X-Lite on my laptop at my office. It took some work with port forwarding and the right firewall rules but I have it working from a remote location as well. I use the laptop when I'm on the road and can forget about the cell not getting a signal or paying the hotels extorsion rates for long distance.

I have an older Compaq machine with 15k SCSI drives in a
raid, dual power
supplies, and 3 Xeon 550 MHz processors. It seems to be
quite happy running
Asterisk for several businesses, as well as web and e-mail
for several
businesses. My big issue is the zaptel support, and I'm
wondering whether or
not I would be better of with a single processor machine
that has a faster
clock speed (and uses less electricity).
