FAQs

I would like to suggest that at the time of 1.4.0 release or
soon
thereafter, the FAQs are moved permanently into the Manual
Wiki
and merely linked to from our main site. 

1) Vaughan, this is not another nag 
2) This avoids a messy online duplication of the FAQ
3) The FAQs will be available for editing by all Manual
editors so will
be much easier to develop (we could perhaps have an
unadvertised 
page to work out and discuss draft changes or new
questions)
4) The agreed changes are available to all users at once
without the 
known difficulties of updating the main website. 
5) Better, more up-to-date FAQs should reduce the overall
support 
workload
6) All readers of the FAQs are routed into the manual so
will have some
inducement to explore it, again potentially reducing the
overall support
workload.
7) If we agree, that's a big chunk of work on [[Pending
Website Changes]]
for the main site that we need not do - the changes I've
suggested (if
we agree) simply become the current version of the FAQ on
the Manual
Wiki

What do we think? The current FAQ in the Manual as it was
started has
images in some questions which is one decision we have to
make, along 
with whether to keep or delete its content, or merge it into
the current
FAQs. I know that James is in favour of having the FAQ on
the Manual 
Wiki as well. Any other votes?

Thanks! I actually hope to get it done sooner, and I vote
YES!

Is it already fully mirrored, i.e., okay if I just take it
off the main 
site?

I could make sure I've grabbed the current text by the
weekend if there
are no dissenting views before then. But I don't think we
want users to
be wandering into the current manual (after looking at the
FAQs) just
at the moment do we? (It's well littered with notes to
ourselves as we
try and get to grips with it).  If we want to move the FAQs
to Wiki now 
shouldn't they go on the main Wiki? I've no real objection
though it's
obviously a bit more work to do that and move them back
again to 
Manual Wiki later. Or we could move into Manual Wiki now and
give 
an explanatory link to the 1.2.x manual?

The main, probably only, argument against this is that they
won't be
translatable there (as there is currently no mechanism for
translating
the manual, despite all the talk about how to do so a while
back), which
is a step back from the website, which is translatable, if
not always
translated.
