Unwanted echo while reading AIF

When I open files created in AIF by other programs (WireTap
and Sndsampler),
Audacity introduces an echo. The only post I could find on
this type of
problem was addressed to live recording problems. I don't
have any problems
with live recordings. I looked at the Audio I/O in
preferences and turned
off both hardware and software playthrough. I don't have any
problem opening
WAV files.

I'm have tried Audacity 1.2.3, 1.26. and 1.3.3 on an iMac
running 10.4.11.
All have the same behaviour. Interesting that the echo is
repeated 4 times
and is almost identical in volume to the original source.

There is a known issue that Audacity cannot play properly
the AIFC files 
that Wiretap produces if you record with
"compression" enabled in its
preferences. This might also be the problem with Sndsampler.
If you 
record uncompressed AIFF files there should be no problem
playing them.
Playthrough in Audacity preferences only affects playback of
a track
which you are currently recording into Audacity.
