There is no such thing as audacity 1.4. 1.4 is the version
number of the
CD produced by Ion, and probably contains an out-of-date
version of
audacity. We recommend you obtain an up to date version of
audacity 1.26
from our website to avoid problems:

You can always check what version of audacity you have under

About.

If the recording is being played back from the audacity
project, then
the waveform will be displayed. However it is possible that
the
recording is so feint that it is not visible on the display,
but can
still be heard with the output volume set high enough.

To check if this is the case, select the entire track (CTRL
+ A) and
then use Effects > Amplify. If the value in the
"Amplification (dB)" box
is large (<10) and positive, then your recording is
indeed quiet.

You can either click OK to raise the level up and make the
waveform
visible, or try and re-record at a higher level.

The problem with amplifying within audacity is that noise
and other
problems can be amplified with the audio, reducing the
quality. There
should be a knob underneath the turntable which can be used
to adjust
the level which is recorded into audacity. Try to adjust
this until the
waveform nearly but not completely fills the track (there
are however
many reports that this does not work at all).

Also, make sure that the phono leads from the turntable are
not touching
anything metal that might short them out and prevent the
recording being
made.
