Hi Steve,
Thank you for this advice. I didn't know about the
"Effects:Amplify"
function.
Often the functions are greyed out.
I agree with you about recording at a louder level in the
first place,
but I don't think my Eon USB turntable has that facility. I
shall check.
Talking about functions being greyed out, after completing a
recording I
seem unable to save the recording. All the settings are
greyed out,
including the save function. At the moment, having made a
recording, I
press the exit X and then I am invited to save the file. I
do this and
it throws me out. Then I have to go back in and find the
saved file.
This can't be right but it seems to work.
Anyway, thanks for your advice.
Regards,
Paul

Paul,
Other than the sound level being lower, is the sound quality
OK? Maybe
you just need to adjust the input recording level higher.
Just be
careful not to set it so high that you go into the red zone
on the input
level meter.
That will cause clipping which will sound awful. You have to
determine
the loudest part of the recording and preset the input level
at that
point.
Then go back and record the whole thing.
The second best alternative is to use the
"amplify" function in Audacity
after you have recorded the LP. Do a "Edit:Select
All" and then
"Effects:Amplify" to bring it up to the 0db level.
That should make the
sound level equivalent to CDs. It is really preferable to
get the input
level setting correct first so that you don't have to use
the amplify
function. You will get a better S/N ratio and more detail in
the lower
levels by doing so.

Paul,
Yes, the effects menu is greyed out until you select
something. I don't
know if the Ion has an output level control, but Audacity
has an input
level control. It is the slider with what looks like a
microphone to the
left of it. With an LP playing, click on the input level
meter and you
will see the recording level indicators flickering up and
down. Then play
with the input level slider and you will see that you can
control how high
the recording level goes. If the level goes above 0db, a red
bar shows up
at the extreme right of the meter bar. You don't want that
to ever happen,
so reduce the level to ensure that it doesn't go that high
at the loudest
peak of the recording. The red bar indicator is sticky so
that is will
stay "on" if the level ever gets that high. You
can reset it by clicking
on the meter.
After you click the stop button after recording something,
what options
are not greyed out of the file menu? You should have several
functions
including "save" and multiple "export"
options. What version of Audacity
are you using and on what operating system?

Paul,
Another possible solution is to use Effects:Normalize. If
you are
recording LP's a side at a time, this would find the peak
for the
entire side and take it to 100%, or whatever % of max you
choose.
This would preserve the musical integrity of the side, so
that the
loudest point of side A is still that, with all other levels
increased in direct proportion.
Or, if you want to just rock out and make each song more
clearly
heard in the car, try Normalize on each song. It will
probably depend
on the type of music and your own personal tastes.
Good luck, and please keep us informed of your best
solution. LP
transfer seems to be a popular subject for posts, as does
USB
turntables.
