I am having difficulty when making a mono recording via the USB port.

The recorded level on the mono track always comes out at L+R-6dB, regardless of whether the audio track is set to 'Mono', 'Left Channel' or 'Right Channel'. The pan control slider also has no effect.

The result is that the recording clips at -6dBFS, giving rise to a 6dB loss of headroom. I can get around the problem by making a stereo recording, doing 'Split Stereo Track' and then deleting the silent track; but I wonder if there is a more elegant fix?

I am running Audacity 1.2.6 under Windows XP SP2; the ADC is a Tapco Link-USB.

John,
you need to go to preferences
audio in/out,
choose whichever driver you're supposed to use in the drop down menu, and TELL audacity you want ONE SINGLE CHANNEL, NOT TWO, NOT STEREO.
then you will be set up to record into your machine, and before you actually record can set your level with the gain slider, and monitor it so it doesn;t clip by clicking once on the input level monitor part of the gui.
if you still have problems, try googling ASIO 4 all, which may or may not compound the problem....your mileage may vary!
but you should be good, once audacity KNOWS where you want your input source to come from.
