Hi

I was about to order a polycom 301 when I noticed that the VoIP protocol is listed
as MGCP and not SIP, as with the 501.

First, what is MGCP?
And, will the 301's work seamlessly with Asterisk and the other 501 phones that I have?

Thanks

Hi Jim,
MGCP Stands for Media Gateway Control Protocol. It's an
older VoIP
protocol that was mainly intended for softswitches to
control VoIP
gateways (hence the name). However, it was also well suited
for telephone
sets (at one time) as well. I personally really like the
MGCP protocol
because it assumes that the endpoint is "dumb as a
brick". ie: everything
from heard tones to dialplan logic ALL comes from the server
side. SIP
phones are rather "intellegent" in that they can
do things like provide
dialtone, perform call forwarding and screening, etc..

Do NOT use MGCP with Asterisk. Although asterisk says it
supports MGCP
it's a horrible implementation of it (and incomplete I
might add). You
should be able to get a Polycom 301 with SIP.

It's just firmware...
Hope that helps!

301s will work fine with Asterisk.  You need to get the 301 model with the SIP application installed, not MGCP. ;  It's a distinct part number, I believe.
