Manuel,
Are we still on schedule for a release early next week?
Who is planning the big party with beverages and plush
penguins for
everyone or is Jeremy just going to add a release note to
the wiki.

If you don't mind, I'd like to hold off on a release until
I and several
others get a chance to thoroughly test it a bit. I don't
mind cutting a
testing branch with generated pre-release tarballs for a
week or two or
three, if that seems reasonable to the rest of you.
Let me know if you have any ideas...

Well , due the recent FTP mirrors police about storing the
packages in their
original formats, in few days when Justin finish the
migration both the old
code and the new code will be broken.
With that in mind, no release or public announce should be
done for now.
But, due that the old code will be broken also, I will merge
the experimental
code to trunk tomorrow, like was planned.
My idea is to start thinking/discussing how to redo the
download code,
implementing it in trunk as soon as the FTP mirrors have the
new packages,
while doing the ICA suppot work in the experimental branch.

That seems reasonable. Let's do it.

Check the download section of the code, I had reverted
back to
http://ftp.lfs-matrix.
net/.... a while back.

Sorry, maybe I am missing something here. Why would it be
such a huge
problem to have the tarballs in a different compression
format? There was
a gzip'ed ncurses patch in LFS development version for a
while after the
UTF-8 merge, so did this break all old and new code also?
The packages will be now in either
.{tar,gz,bz2,tar.bz2,tar.gz,tgz,.tar.Z,.zip} formats. We
handle it in the
LiveCD Makefiles without too much problem. The .zip files I
never
recompressed before either since they aren't normally
stored in a
packagename-1.2.3 directory.
It should also be easier with regards to BLFS automated
builds, since now
the filenames and so on in the BLFS book will match 100%
what is on the
ftp servers.
I haven't started touching LFS packages yet and this will
likely be a week
or two still.

The issue is not what mirror is used, but the the packages
will be in the
original .tar.bz2 or tar.gz format used upstream.
Then we can't rely any more in that all packages have
tar.bz2 for download
purposses. We will need a new method to know the actual
extension for each
package to can download it.

The real issue is that until now in the LFS book there was
no mention about
the actual packages filenames, then in the jhalfs code the
names are
generated from general.ent plus a hardcoded .tar.bz2 (except
for additional
packages, whos names are actually into the book commands).
I have ready a patch for LFS to put full dowloads links for
all packages, like
the ones in CLFS, HLFS, and BLFS.
After that, we could just to use a XSL to generate wget
scripts instead using
the hacks that we are doing now.

Thanks for the explanation Manuel. That makes sense. I
never noticed
that the file names were never mentioned in the LFS book.
That is kind of
weird.

Sounds good. Thanks for your work Manuel. Sorry for the
sudden change
with all the ftp stuff, but ever since I became ftp mirror
maintainer I
have heard these complaints and finally it was just enough
to make me
change my mind.

After a big delay due to huge connexion problems, I will do
the merge of
experimental branch to trunk today.
