a HP (NOT COMPAQ) xw8200, don't say that we didn't tell you so

yes, i was looking to put together a CPU myself - 
  but it was always going to be a w8000 or 8200. Using anything else is out of

It was really just a case of finding out what a 
  second hand 2 year old Compaq would be missing if I bought one to go with the

In theory, 
    according to Avid’;s website, you can use any supported XW8000 or 
    XW8200s.  Avid’;s models tend to have a prequisite amount of ram, and 
    the SCSI external kit included.  They may beef up the power supply to a 
    350W, but I think it is a standard box from HP.  The biggest thing is 
    the bus structure on the motherboard.  Everything else is not as 
    important.

    
 

    
If you are looking 
    for a “deal” you may look at a refurbished XW8000 or XW8200. Do not… DO NOT 
    try to build your own computer.  The Hp’s are beasts and can handle 
    whatever Avid can through at it.  Anything you can buy on the gray
