Why not just save him the trouble? This email from Michael refers to mixing 35mm 3perf and 16mm but the concept is the same.
You don't have to make two projects to track multiple gauges. Create a 35mm 3 perf project and track the 3 perf material in the KN Start column, then set the Ink Number column to be "display as KeyKode" and "count as 16mm". From there everything is managed in a single project. Depending on vesion of software, these Ink Numnber settings are set from the Film/24p settings, in Xpress Pro and Adrnealine 5.0/2.0 and later the mixed gauges are tracked within the bin iteslf with the proper columns for the Ink and Aux Ink columns. Mixing gauges is easier to manage.
In FilmScribe, select both KN START and Ink Number for the lists. One or the other will be filled or blank depending on your source media. Any version will do this.
For ALE inport, edit the ALE for the 16mm material as a test file and change the KN STart column to be Ink Number before import. If on an older system using the Film/24p settings, make sure the settngs are set for KeyKode/16mm before doing the import (or logging of any kind).
Michael Please search the archives for this issue. Michael Phillips has addressed 3 & 4-perf in the same project on MANY occasions. You don't need separate projects and you don't need to keep material on separate tracks but you do need to do some manipulating of the how data is kept in the bin.

Hello all,
I am working on a 3perf 35mm 24p NTSC project using Media Composer v11 and we will now be shooting on 4 perf also. Any advice on how best to deal with this in the Avid?
Thanks in advance,
Mandy
