just ignore him... the thing about Bob is when he's calm his advice is extremely good and well worth reading...when he's ranting the value of what he says nose dives

but the rants are funny.... I especially like his analogies... like the ones where he asks if you let a guy build you a house for under $100  etc.. ;     im laughing now!

oops! i wrote on the Avid-L again.......

sshhh...I think I can hear Bob coming.

Why are YOU posting on the Avid-L?  If people want to use this list let them. ; You don’t have to respond and if you hate this list so much unsubscribe.  The L2 requires you to log into Yahoo and for some people that’s a pain. ; Nice not to have the spam but it’s a choice not a requirement.

Marc -

#1 - why are you posting on AVID-L instead of AVID-L2

#2 - when you build your own CPU, instead of buying a HP (NOT COMPAQ) xw8200, don't say that we didn't tell you so !!!!!!

#3 - do you think that you can build your own computer workstation that meets these specs for $1000 ?

yes, i was looking to put together a CPU myself - but it was always going to be a w8000 or 8200. Using anything else is out of the question.

It was really just a case of finding out what a second hand 2 year old Compaq would be missing if I bought one to go with the 2 year old orphaned Adrenaline I have.

In theory, according to Avid’s website, you can use any supported XW8000 or XW8200s.  Avid’s models tend to have a prequisite amount of ram, and the SCSI external kit included.  They may beef up the power supply to a 350W, but I think it is a standard box from HP.  The biggest thing is the bus structure on the motherboard.  Everything else is not as important.

If you are looking for a “deal” you may look at a refurbished XW8000 or XW8200. Do not… DO NOT try to build your own computer.  The Hp’s are beasts and can handle whatever Avid can through at it.  Anything you can buy on the gray market is not going to be enough power.

can someone tell me what is done to the standard Compaq w8000 or 8200 to make it an 'Avid ready' ?

is there a special fan kit etc... and anything else? I need to get a CPU to go with an Adrenaline box.
