You can subtract a halfspace or ARB8 from a top level obejct
to get the
cutaway. Attached is a small script that builds a geometry
consisting
of a ball and a hollow box with a cutaway. You can read the
commands,
at "source" them into an MGED session to build the
geometry:
mged> source cutaway.mged
This will show you a cutaway view of the box and sphere.
Note that it
is OK to subtract or intersect a primitive with combinations
above the
region level, but not to union.

Subject: [brlcad-users] How to do a cut away raytrace?
I am trying to create a cutaway image of a model and need
help. For
instance what commands would create an image as if the model
had been
cut along a plane along the centerline from front to back
with the
viewing direction perpendicular to the cut and the portion
on the side
facing the viewer is gone.
In general that plane could be at any azimuth/elevation and
the viewing
plane might not be perpendicular. How would the commands
differ for the
general case.
Is this something that needs to be setup in mged, or can it
all be
entered from the command line to rt (or in a script)?
Thanks for any suggestions,
Kathy
