Ohloh.net is an increasingly popular statistics gathering
site that
reviews and computes metrics based on a project's entire
source code
history going through each and every single change to the
code by all
developers over the lifetime of the project. They follow
project
activity and track what happens over time. This in turn
allows them
to report on interesting metrics like which developers have
contributed the most, how many person-years effort have been
invested, what distribution of programming languages are
used, and
much much more.
Robin Luckey (of Ohloh) has been gathering information
regarding the
oldest public source code repositories that they currently
have
indexed in their database, which presently consists of more
than
14,000 projects (including BRL-CAD). Robin recently wrote a
brief
article regarding which projects of those indexed actually
have
retained the most extensive project revision histories. His
rather
interesting article with results is available here:
http://www.ohloh.net/blog/worlds_oldest_source_c
ode_repositories
Not many projects live for several decades, even fewer can
demonstrate several decades of their project's history. So
far, at
least, it seems that BRL-CAD actually has the oldest
preserved source
code revision history of them all! It's nice to get
recognition of
the hard work that was put in to preserve the *entire*
history of BRL-
CAD even through the conversion to open source software.
Hope you
enjoy Robin's article as much as I did.
Cheers!
Sean
p.s. I'll likely send more details on some of the other
project
statistics that Ohloh reports on later down the road, but
feel free
to check out the BRL-CAD statistics for yourself in the
meantime by
