Sendmail may turn tools over to open source
April 09, 2006

Sendmail, whose products are built on the software that
delivers many
e-mail messages, may release some substantial new technology
as open
source.
The company has a long involvement in the collaborative
software movement.
It sells proprietary software that works with a popular
open-source
component, also called Sendmail, used to transfer e-mail
from one server
to another...

Gregory Magnusson on Using BSD
April 09, 2006

I originally "met" Gregory L. Magnusson when he
sent me an email regarding
the FreeBSD Basics column. We sent each other the odd email
over the years
so when he came to Ontario last summer for a work placement,
he arranged to
come visit the BSD User group in Ottawa. After the usual
pizza, beer, and
geek talk, we took him for a tour of Parliament Hill and
then pointed him
in the direction of the By... read more.

April 07, 2006

I use FreeBSD and Linux on more than 15 servers at work.

GNU Screen

GNU Screen is a multi-screen window manager that can turn a
single remote
connection into a universe of possibilities. I can read a
logfile, connect
to my other servers, and read my favorite BOFH episode, all
over one SSH
connection.

D-Link routers abuse FreeBSD developer's NTP server
April 07, 2006

FreeBSD developer and NTP buff Poul-Henning Kamp runs a
stratum-1 NTP
server specifically for the benefit of networks directly
connected to the
Danish Internet Exchange (DIX). Some time last fall,
however, D-Link
started including his server in a hardcoded list in their
router firmware.
Poul-Henning now estimates that between 75% and 90% of NTP
traffic at his
server originates from D-Link gear.

Day 2: Linuxworld Boston
April 07, 2006

Day 2 at Linuxworld was much busier than the first day--I'd
say the amount
of expo attendees was nearly double. Myself, Matt, Devon,
Jason, and Tom
Miller (a local NetBSD user) were back at the BSD booth and
were available
to answer questions. Tom McLaughlin also joined us for the
day and won the
award for best laptop sticker.Bruce Potter was happy to see
that my laptop
was sporting a shmoocon... Read More.
