Thread: Banshee and the OpenMoko

If I understand banshee right, it is designed so that
various
interfaces can be placed on top of it and various engines
can be put
below it. I'm also seeing that there is an interest in
running .net[1]
on the OpenMoko[2]. so I'm thinking it would be easy enough
to create
an interface that would run, perhaps on the Helix backend.
I
understand Helix is a common embedded device product. Then
an
interface could be put together with perhaps an appropriate
radio
plugin and we'd have banshee for this cool cell phone and
also
providing ip radio.

To be sure, this is a long way from fruition. The .net
implementation
for OpenMoko is still in the planning stage, but I'd like to
see
banshee break into its potential to have other interfaces on
top of
it. I really like the current one, but why not spread the
beauty out
to OpenMoko or KDE or Vista?

So how big a project would that really be? Is the ease of
this porting
all in my head? Being a non-programmer, I'm likely missing
many issues
that would have to be faced, but it sounds like an
interesting project
for someone with interest in embedded stuff and C#/Mono.

Banshee should be portable, but I'm afraid nobody of us has
an OpenMoko.
I'd be willing to hack on it though, would be a great test
for our
codebase.

I am definitely interested in getting Banshee to run on the
Neo1973,
and I am in the developer program so I'll get a phone in a
few weeks.
I'm definitely not an expert in everything that will be
needed to get
it running, so coordinating with others would be great. For
an
example of implementing an alternative frontend to Banshee,
look in
src/Core/Banshee.Hyena/.

Don't they have a development platform or something that can
be used
to hack on it without the phone?

Awesome! I'm
looking forward to picking up a Neo1073 once they are
available for the general public.

I like the idea of banshee on a touchscreen.

Hey! Nice to see someone else on both of these lists.

I've been on the openmoko list since the early days and
think it is a very
exciting project. It would be great to see applications like
Banshee working
on it and getting involved.

The openmoko mailing list (there are actually about 5 or so)
is very active
and helpful and interesting. I encourage interested parties
here to give that
project a look.

There are a number of emulators for OpenMoko (xoo, qemu),
and some of us will
have OpenMokos very soon.

I'm trying to set up the OpenMoko development environment
and emulators as we speak.

Hi

Is it possible to run Hyena using the make files? I'm just
getting
library linking problems when trying to run it direct or
using 'run' in
it's own makefile.

Cheers

It probably needs to be updated because of changes in the
rest of
Banshee; it was written quite a while ago and is not
actively
developed.

I took some time to play around with Hyena, and I managed to
get "make
run" to work and start the application.

The changes to /src/Core/Banshee.Hyena/Makefile.am are easy,
but then I
had to change some stuff in other places : the code assumed
that the
main menu widget was present, and that lead to a crash.

I'll put the patch on Bugzilla if anyone is interested. What
I have now
needs some more work.

Cheers,
