Well, installing kde did not fix the problem. I haven't
yet executed
startkde. But I'd like to add the workaround to the book.
Anyone have
any objections to a note in the book?

Could you in one summarized email explain the following?
(nobody wants to go back and read an entire thread, but
thinking
about this thread, it seems to do with aRTS and GAIM).

1. What is the problem?
2. What is the workaround?
3. How does it affect the rest of the book?
4. Why is this just being noticed now?

I know this is a hassle DJ, but to ask a question to the
group, which
if you're like me and the thread has no interest
whatsoever, but then
a "workaround" is being suggested, which is in
some other email who
knows when, it unlikely to get good responses.

I've found that it's better to say:

I'd like to do [insert workaround] because [messed up
stuff], and
the affect on the book is [describe]. Anyone see any issues
with this?

This way you can get meaningful responses.

Yes I see I've lost the meat of the thread. If you have
installaled
libao (required for sound in gaim) and have libao linked
against aRts,
without having run startkde, gaim will exit when you attempt
to send
messages. Think gnome-centric environment.

The cause of the problem is that aRts expects to see a
~/.kde/socket-$(hostname) directory. Normally, this is
handled
somewhere in kdeinit. You can get around the problem by
creating the
directory manually with
'mkdir -p ~/.kde/socket-$(hostname)'. I'd like to add
that to a note in
the book. I'm assuming that most who install it must not
be installing
aRts, or have installed kde.

I hope that is a little better description.

Sounds fine to me. I can't comment on the problem because
I've never
installed KDE.
