You can use this same strategy to create labels using
Technorati
Tags.  This manual process or the manual technorati process
isn't as
easy as the new blogger methodology nor as easy as using a
wordpress
blog, but it can be done.

Using Technorati Tags also provides the benefit of greater
indexing of
your articles and more traffic through that indexing from
Technorati
viewers.  I used to use this methodology before starting to
switch my
blogs over to the new blogger tags.

I am not a big fan of labels in the sidebar. And while the
"tag cloud"
is looks Web 2.0'ish ... same feelings there.

Labels (or tags) used in this manner will dilute any
hierarchical
structure for your blog. Categories on the other hand can
allow a
reader (or a bot) to drill down and find what they are
looking for.
Labels will flatten the blog out in endless loops.

I just started a new blog to deal with some of the issues
concerning
Blogspot and how the bots will look at them (amongst other
goodies). I
just finished two articles of great detail. One of them is
how to set
up pseudo-Categories for your Blogspot blog and maintaining
it.

While the article deals with the newer layouts, a saavy
Classic
template user should be able to figure out how to make the
category
list and paste it right into their templates.
