Recently I approved a message, then came across a similar
message in a
new thread. This made me suspicious as one of the tactics or
spammers
it to pretend to ask questions, but whose main purpose is to
post
links to their websites. As I result, the second new thread
did not
pass moderation and the first post was deleted.
The author has since contacted me and I have explained the
situation.
It is OK to post links to signature line as long as you are
doing
something legit like asking for genuine help or helping
another
blogger. In fact I myself is guilty of posting links, but my
links are
ALWAYS RELEVANT to the question asked and I only post when
it is
appropriate to do so. I have ran into problem with some
members of
other forums regarding this issue, and one started to try to
destroy
my reputation, and I was forced to defend myself, using up
valuable
time. So I started compiling comments from grateful bloggers
(no name
mentioned) just in case I run into the same problem again
which in
fact did happen. Since I habitually post links, as a
preventive
measure, I am posting a link to the compilation:
http://blogger-tricks.blog
spot.com/2004/05/comments-about-blogger-tips-and-tricks.html
Different forums have different rules, but for this one, it
is OK to
include link or links in yuor signature line as long as the
message is
legit. In fact, I am going to put lots of links in my
signature line
but I do not feel guilty as I believe this message is legit
and no one
is forced to click on any of the links.

To give you some idea of the kind of spam you members are
protected
from, I just removed multiple ones:
Paris Hilton hot video
Sex service in Mumbai (many links and many messages)
The second one is a blatant spammer sending multiple
messages with
multiple links plus phone nos. I got fed-up with banning. To
get my
revenge, I changed their subscription type from no email to
individual
email, remove posting rights, Either the emails wouldn't get
read or
may bounce. Whatever it is, that is my way of getting
revenge on
blatant spammers

Dear Enviroman,
I just want to clarify what is allowed and what is not in
terms of
"signature links". Sometimes when I sign off from
a post I include
under my typical "SJ xx" signature links to my
blogs. For example:
SJ xx
Skanky Jane's Ruses of Pleasure
http:/
/skankyjanesrusesofpleasure.blogspot.com
Skanky Jane's Bargain Box
http://skankyjane.blog
spot.com
Found in Pockets
http://foundinpock
ets.blogspot.com
Skanky Jane's Space...it's Social
http://blog.myspac
e.com/skankyjane
Do you mean we are not allowed to do this? And/or do you
mean that we
can only do this if the link is relevant to the particular
post we are
making or answering?
All of the links in the example above are main address urls
to my
blogs. I rarely post links to individual blog posts and
would only do
so if, as you say, the individual blog post was relevant to
the
Blogger General Discussion post I was making or answering.
In that
respect I agree with you.
As mentioned, I rarely include links to individual blog
posts, the
links I include are to my blogs' main address.
I don't always do this, sometimes I am too lazy or I forget
or I
simply don't want to do it. I started doing it because I
noticed other
(reputable) bloggers doing it.
I figure that if someone make the effort and takes the time
to create
or answer a post in a Google Blog Group then they deserve a
little
self-promotion - especially when you consider how few people
really
take the time to answer other people's questions or check
out other
people's work!
Anyway, I am not sure if the example I have provided is the
type of
signature linking you are banning, hence my question. Also,
please
know that I totally understand and support your stance on
spam and
will, of course, abide by the rules of the group. Lastly,
however,
regarding rules of the group, are members of Blogger
General
Discussion allowed to have any input into the group rules
and
management?
With thanks
SJ x

Let me clarify. When I say relevant links, I mean posting
links to
answer questions. This matter was mentioned because some
members of
other forums took exception to me posting links to answer
questions
rather than answering the question in full in the forum
itself.
Whether this is permissible or not will of course depend on
the forum
owners/administrators/moderators. In those cases, the
owners/
administrators/moderators are silent on this issue and have
never
raised an objection while the members who are neither
owners/
administrators/moderators found it fit to play the role of
owners/
administrators/moderators which I do not accept.
By all means help answer questions and include link or links
to your
blogs, relevant or not to the question. The only thing that
we require
is that you address the question and not go off tangent and
talk about
something else in the body of the message. The link in my
signature
line for example, is not relevant to this thread or
forum"
