Thread: Data paths in 3.0

Data paths in 3.0

I know this was also screwy in 2.x, but here goes... Having
deployed
3.0m2 (pretty smooth deployment - nicely done!) I have only
one serious
gripe, and that's about data paths.

I adjusted the "blogs" directory property before
building the DB to be
"/var/my.domain/blogs" since I expect to put all
dynamic data into /var
(makes backup management easier) only to be a bit mystified
on being
unable to find any data there. Hunted around, and (!) there
it is in
"/svr/my.domain/blojsom/WEB-INF/var/my.domain/blogs&q
uot;.

Ugh. Easy enough to move and symlink around the problem,
but really the
data (blog content, as well as custom resources and
templates) should
not all hang under WEB-INF if the administrator specifies an
absolute path.

Oh well, that's off my chest I have in
the past struggled to figure
out where blojsom is picking-up the resources (or failing to
pick up CSS
mainly) when I've swizzled directories around to a sane
scheme...

How hard would it be to move to a config scheme where the
blog-path,
resources-path and templates-path use absolute pathnames if
so
specified, defaulting to relative paths hanging off the
context root or
WEB-INF as needed. I can see that templates will be a
problem, since
they need to get compiled, so need to be in the app
directory - or might
there be a way around that one?

Data paths in 3.0

Hmmm ... Seems like it could be done if I added a couple of
new parameters
to use absolute paths (boolean) and installation path
(string) or something.
But, gotta give that some more thought after 3.0 is out.

Templates won't be a problem I imagine. They're not
"compiled", they're just
read in by Velocity. The Velocity dispatcher in blojsom is
setup to prefer
the filesystem over the templates on the classpath, so
really it'd just be a
matter of it being able to use the absolute path.

But, I'll look back at this after I finish the initial
release of 3.0 final.
