Visual C++ .NET 2005 - msvc 8.0
Visual C++ .NET 2003 - msvc 7.1
Visual C++ .NET 2002 - msvc 7.0
Visual C++ 6.0       - msvc 6.0

For me the naming does not appear that homogeneous, I have:

Visual Studio 6.0       -> msvc 6.0
Visual Studio .NET -> msvc 7.0
Visual Studio .NET 2003 -> msvc 7.1
Visual Studio 2005      -> msvc 8.0

Visual C++ .NET 2005 is not correct. Since 2005 MS removes
the .NET name
because of confusion by the customers.
