hello all,
i'm trying to execute skype in brandz and got this error:
-bash-2.05b$ skype-1.4.0.118/skype
skype-1.4.0.118/skype: error while loading shared libraries:
libasound.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file
or directory
I have CentOS release 3.7 (Final), Kernel 2.4.21 on an i686
After reading:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/solarisx86/message
/43017
i understand this is normal, but also found this info from
darren moffat:
http://blogs.sun.com/darren/entry/skype_1.3.0.53_
on_solaris_via
he talks about libasound that it succeed in recompiling.
But i don't understand where he took the source files for
libasound?
Anybody knows how to deal with skype?
thanks in advance for help,
gerard

This is normal.
Skype 1.4 requires ALSA...
What happens with Skype 1.3 is that you fake it by compiling libasound
which lets Skype 1.3 check for ALSA support, then the EMPTY ALSA driver
reports correctly that there is NO ALSA... then SKype 1.3 shifts to OSS.
Unfortunately, Skype 1.4 doesn't have OSS as far as I know. It also
makes some asumptions that aren't valid with BrandZ and kernel 2.4. See
my entry on getting 1.4 to work, but doing so by using the 2.6 kernel :

ok, thanks for your reply. Not a very useful response,
because i don't
want to install kernel 2.6 (qemu fits my needs).
I'm very disappointed that everything that works in brandz
is totally
useless. I'm very impressed by everything done in
(Open)Solaris,
generally speaking, but i don't understand why chatting with
skype in
brandz is better than just using pidgin in native
solaris/opensolaris
and now, i'm trying to compile SFEpulseaudio and have new
problems, but
that's another story that need a post on different channel.
Thanks for your help,
gerard

Gerard,
Sorry you don't like the answer.
Note that installing kernel 2.6 is about the same amount of work as
installing kernel 2.4 for Brandz. Not much harder. But you will get
better performance than QEMU.
I've seen a lot of people find the current status of BrandZ, on the
contrary, quite useful. So not everybody shares your appraisal of the
quality of the work done on BrandZ. It's been designed with a purpose,
to be a transition solution until an application existing on Linux gets
ported to Solaris. As such, it doesn't aim to be 100% ideal. Just an
intermediary step.
Now, if you do find BrandZ to be useless, since this is an open source
project, I would very heartily recommend that you add your skills to
the work being done on getting kernel 2.6 fully supported in BrandZ,
that way everybody benefits from it.
Now... why you would want to chat with Skype is a good question. Some
people like the fact that it provides encryption (though Pidgin ships
with OTR by default on Solaris). Some others like the fact that it goes
through corporate firewalls nicely, unlike most IM protocols which can
be easily blocked. Of course system administrators don't like that as
much. Others would want audio to work.
Frankly, I would prefer a native build of Skype for Solaris. And the
more people ask Skype for it... the more likely we will get one. Have
you asked Skype if/when they plan to support Solaris?
Gilles.
