What search engine solutions are some of you all using?

We've used ht:dig but it hasn't been update for a long time.
So I
removed it from our systems.
Google-mini - can't justify the cost at the moment.

Currently I'm looking to see if Zend_Search_Lucene will
function as expected...
Has anyone tried this or the Apache Lucene version?

Thanks

Lucene is very nice, as is Solr, which you'd be able to
query from
PHP on the front-end, if you wanted. I'm also a fan of
KinoSearch,
but you're not running Perl on the front-end, so it probably
wouldn't
be a great fit.

We've had good luck with Mnogo. It supports unicode.

We're currently evaluating Swish-e for our Intranet and
Internet sites, but since I'm not the one doing the eval, I
cannot speak for it's effectiveness as a search engine.

swish-e is also very good - I think grist.org and the new
internationalist are using that.

Our developer who's looking into search mentioned the
following:

=====

Lucene: I tried using Hutch under Lucene. But diacritics
weren't handled that way I want (I want diacritics folded to
the base ASCII character before indexing or searching. That
way a name with a diacritic (say an acute) and be searched
putting in an a or an a-acute).

Swish: There's some strange utf8/iso-8859-1 problem running
swish on RHEL3. But it works OK on RHEL4.

We started with Mnogosearch, it worked pretty well, just
occasional
tweaks and some occasional database cleanup. We now have a
google-mini.
The google appliance is just plain maintenance free, I
haven't touched
it for over a year now.
