| Limiting category options when creating
stories |

|

Is there a way to limit what category options appear by
story/media
type?
In my case, we're putting most of our images under the
parent category
'images'. Within 'images' there are many subcategories.
We're doing this
because 1) we're trying to follow the current structure and
2) we reuse
images a lot so associating them to one story doesn't make
that much
sense.
But when one creates a new story, you have to wade through
all these
categories intended only for images. If possible, I'd like
to exclude
our image categories when creating/editing stories. Is this
possible
through permissions management?

Thanks Phillip, I was hoping this was possible outside of
modifying the
source code. I have to admit, permission management is the
one area of
Bricolage that I'm least familiar with.
As I understand it, I can limit what categories appear using
user
groups. For example, say I want to restrict my
communications manager to
managing stories of type 'News Release' within the category
'/about/news/'. I could create a user group called
'Communications' and
DENY all categories except '/about/news/', right? I'm
assuming that I
could also somehow limit what types of stories this user
group can
access.
While this solves my problem for discrete user groups, those
of us with
broader permissions would still need to wade through the
long list of
categories.

Was that modification committed?

Hey there Chris,
I think this has been asked before -- limiting the visible
categories
based on permissions -- and I don't think there's an easy
way to do it
(unfortunately). However, just taking a guess here: if it
were a show-
stopper, I suspect you could adjust the query that produces
the
category list to exclude certain categories from the results
....
maybe even based on what profile is being used (media or
story).
I may be way off -- so hopefully others will correct me if
that's just
"way out there."

I was under the impression that restricting permission
prevented users
from putting stories in those categories, but not
necessarily from
seeing them. I have to admit some fuzziness in my
understanding of the
breadth of Bricolage's permission system too ... so I could
be way off

The Bricolage source code required a modification to
restrict story search results based on user permissions such
as categories.

Yes, although in practice, I've never used DENY. If you give
them
permission to the one category and to no others, and they're
not in
any other user group, then they won't see the others.

Yeah, there's the ruby, especially since the same users
needs to see
different categories depending on whether they're editing
stories or
media.

You need READ permission to the category itself (via
category groups)
to be able to add a story to it.
