Process for file and story deletion?

Is this the correct process for removing a file from your
destinations
and deleting it?

1) Check out story
2) Set expiration date to present
3) Publish the story (which triggers an expire job)
4) Delete the story after publish event

Or set it in the past, which is easier, just change the
year.
