People,
Work have asked for the folowing application....
We have a "salesman" who has a laptop, and is
out and about, connecting back
to the office via VPN at irregular intervals, as well as
visiting the office.
They want a DB of contacts, and for staff back here at
Admin to be able to
use and update the DB. I have a .php & MySQL app thought
out - that's the
simple part.
I am thinking a DB on his machine, and another here at
Admin. I would need
him to be able to Sync the two databases, so people here at
Admin can work
with and update the data. When he syncs, his entries will
need to be
populated to the Admin DB, and altered entries from people
here at Admin (in
the Admin DB), to be sent back to his DB.
So, is there a simple way to do this, or a MySQL addon, or
even a commercial
product (price within reason) ?
Any help much appreciated.

Hi - I probably shouldn't say this on a MySQL email list
but Sybase had a
great solution to this about 10 years ago built into their
SQL Anywhere
product. They built their replication to be two-way from the
start and
allowed you to define trigger-like code to handle conflicts.
It was a neat
and useful solution to the problem.
Maybe you should try a commercial product - it might save
your company lots
of development money. I personally used the product in a
large Australian
3-tier replication product.
Cheers,
John
