Things to bear in mind when changing updatedb...

Leslie,

There are some relevant bug reports which relate to design
features of
updatedb and to features that updatedb has just because it's
a shell
script. It's worth bearing in mind if the changes you plan
will
address those problems also.

It's not that I am asking you to fix the bugs, it's that I
hope we can
make the problems irrelevant by improving updatedb's
design.

nu.org/bugs/?14386

Thanks,
James.

This one seems to be a Debian issue.

Okay, that's a good point. I'll see what to do about this
issue.

Another Good Thing. Let's do that.

Foundation for fixing this has been laid: updatedb is
expected to clean
up on all termination conditions (except SIGKILL of
course).

Already solved. Will use gen_tempname from gnulib.

Yes - as long as we exit with a nonzero status on this kind
of
failure, we've done the right thing.

James.

Not really, imho if you consider running updatedb by cron
normal
usage. The current updatedb script issues error message on
unreadable directories, i.e. every time it runs. Therefore
we are
forced to redirect error messages to /dev/null when running
from cron.
What we would like to have is through away informational
messages and
report real unexpected errors. The merged report
http://bugs.debian.org/
183086 has got some discussion.
